front row seats

it's always fun when they start doing dirt work on the new house that is being built right by ours.  especially when the little people will sit outside for hours watching the dump trucks come and go and the bulldozers flatten it out.  seriously...hours.

all that was missing was some popcorn.

an afternoon of entertainment

not for the frog, mind you.  he's probably told all of his frog friends to stay far away from our yard.  we'll probably never see another frog anywhere near here again.  i guess we'll have to make do with worms.

it's that time of year again.

and we don't try to hide the redneck in us.

the boys and i went to wally world today and picked up our afternoon of entertainment.

and poor reed could only watch.

give him a year.  and we'll turn him into a little redneck, too!

the many faces of a scratched cornea

swollen and not happy.

loving the cool "pirate patch."

feeling much better.

what a disaster this was!  i'm on the verge of making my people wear goggles everyday so we don't have to do this ever again!!

figuring things out

while chase worked the other night, i decided to get out my photography books that i haven't read yet and try to learn something.

i learned that this camera has approximately 8743 settings.  most of the explanations of each setting use words that either are in some weird photography language or are way over my head.

i learned that i should have taken that photography class with my roommate in college.  it would have been a much better elective than cpr.  (yes, cpr was a class that took an entire semester, and it was a snoozefest.)  live and learn, i guess.

but after an hour and a half on only two pages, i did learn a few things.  i think.

i can skip around and only focus on what i want to focus on.  and reed is really cute to focus on.

i learned that changing the aperture changes the amount of light that enters the camera and therefore makes the picture darker or lighter.

i learned that reed wasn't quite sure about the grass at first.

but then he got over it.

i learned that our grass is really green.  (props to chase.)

i learned that william is in need of a haircut.

i learned that i will never be able to get a good picture of all three of these people.

so see...a fairly productive night.  now if i could just find time to read the next two pages, i might be on to something!

thumbs

william was a pacifier kid.  he only got to use it in the bed, so he couldn't wait to get in the bed at nap and nighttime.  (i know...i'm a genius.)  a few days after he turned two, he bit a hole in the pacifier.  he handed it to me and told me it was broken.  seeing this as an opportunity, i handed it back to him and told him that it was all that we had.  he handed right back to me and said, "well, throw it away...it's broken.  i don't want it."  and that's all there was to it.

since it was that easy with william, i gave wes a pacifier as soon as i could get it in his mouth.  he wasn't having any part of it.  ever.  in his little mind, nothing could compare to his thumb.    it's a shame, but i don't remember who gave us wes' pacifier.  his name is puppy.  he stays in wes' bed, he gets and gives kisses, he snuggles, he gets stories read to him, he gets tucked in, and he gets carried with us everywhere we go on trips.  yes, i have several of them (my little secret) that get swapped out here and there to get a good washing!  he is wes' most prized possession, and the moment he sees puppy, his left thumb goes in his mouth.  bedtime...done.

reed wouldn't take a pacifier either.  despite being given really cute ones personalized with his name, he wasn't having anything other than his thumb.  and since puppy works so well with wes, reed is now the owner of monkey.  (we are very original over here.)  he stays in reed's bed, and as soon as he sees him, his left thumb goes in his mouth.  bedtime...done.

so the other night after baths, reed and wes were sitting in the hall upstairs.  i made chase go get puppy and monkey to see if they would do it at the same time.

"mom, please...do you mind?  we're in the middle of something here."

all that to say that these things are awesome!  if you have a thumb sucker, and you want an easy bedtime...i'm talking - hand monkey to kid, put him in bed, walk away...get you one of these.  and don't be surprised if you get one of these from me as a baby gift.  diapers, wipes and clothes are for the birds when nighttime can be this easy!!

we blame this on kakki

i went upstairs to put up some of william's clothes a few days ago.  he was about to build something with his erector set.  the window seat looked like this...

i think we all know where his ocd genes come from.

all the hard work paid off

it seems like it's been raining every weekend for the past month.  and when it rains, you can only play inside and read books for so long before one of the brothers gets injured.  so at some point during each rainy period, superman breaks out the wii.

and all of his hard work on the weekends must have paid off because he is now a preschool graduate!

hopefully 12 years from now, wii sports will not be how he spends his weekends!  and maybe he'll have a diploma to show for it!

wes is "tree!"

today wes turns 3.  we've been celebrating for a week, but he's still excited about it!

this past weekend we celebrated at our house with a "byot" party. "bring your own toy" for those of y'all out of the loop. riding toy, that is. i don't know why we asked everyone to bring their own because between us and our neighbors, we have enough riding toys to supply a small army of 3 year olds. but they had a blast.

and then they ate cake.

reed was wishing it was july so he could have a piece.

and then the little people went to town on a pinata.

william had to finish it off.

and wes didn't care that he could be scoring large amounts of candy to eat later. he just wanted to open the first pack of skittles he came to and get them in his mouth as fast as he could. he would live off of sugar alone if i let him.

reed wanted a turn, but he settled for chewing on the bat.

and while the little people were raking in the candy, this is what our cul-de-sac looked like. maybe we could supply 2 small armies of 3 year olds!

but, i think thiis might be the first time this has happened in the history of the world, there were no tears! no meldowns. nobody fought. nobody got hurt. we needed to have a party after the party to celebrate that!!

but we settled for eating more cake. because it was my birthday on saturday.

i'm thinking that next year i need to get a pinata.
