the greatest show on earth is not that great.

carol is back in tupelo.  remember last year when a circus elephant got shot in a drive-by shooting?  well she has recovered, and she made it back to tupelo to perform.  on friday, i got to tag along with a group of 4 year olds to see the greatest show on earth.  maybe i was expecting too much.

i can't recall how many circuses i have been to in my life.  i'd venture to guess not too many, but i'm pretty sure i remember the circus being mostly about animals.  maybe a few elephants dancing, a giant cat jumping through a hoop, a monkey maybe?  i guess PETA or some anti-circus group has forced the circus to cut back.  because what i saw on friday was a low key cirque show.  acrobats, gymnasts, ninja people and some tight rope walkers.  i'm not saying that they weren't good at what they did, but 4 year olds want animals.  33 year olds do too.

look at these faces....

they wanted animals that did tricks.  what they got were some jack russells riding on the back of shetland ponies, some camels that stood there and let the ponies run underneath them, and the elephants.  one of the dogs was stuffed and tied to the back of a pony.  i'm still not sure if that was meant to be funny, or if one of the dogs got stage fright and that was their backup plan.

the tight rope people did a good job not breaking their necks.

and the elephants stole the show.  all 5 minutes that they were out there!

i guess it was worth it for the $10 that i paid to get in.  the kids were entertained.  it just wasn't "the greatest show on earth."

as reed was going to bed friday night, he ended my week with a smile.

me:  "i had fun at the circus with you."
reed:  "me too."
me:  "did you like those ninjas?"
reed:  "yeah, but you know what my favorite part was?"
me:  "what?"
reed:  "the dogs riding the horses, the elephants, and the...the....the....moose."
me:  *weird look*
reed:  "no.  i mean, the...the...you know...the...that thing....the....'woooohooooo, hump day' kind of guy."
me:  "the camel."
reed:  "yeah.  him.  i liked him."

so it wasn't the greatest show on earth, but that's definitely one of the greatest commercials!
